Nigel Quashie Interview

Seen above in action last season with IR Reykjavik.

Nigel Quashie return to Great Britain has come with little fanfare. After 2 seasons out of football he returned last season to join Icelandic division 2 side IR as player/coach and eventually became player/manager but before joining IR there had been an on again off again proposed move to Dundee FC. The move to Dundee finally came in time for pre-season training and we recently caught up with Nigel after training...

DP98 - So Nigel how does it feel being back in the UK and now playing with your first ever Scottish side?

NQ - Well I honestly never thought I would be playing back in the UK there really hadn't been any interest, there had been mention of both Leyton Orient and MK Dons but that was more media hype than anything else. I did play a few reserve match with Orient but that was a bout all.

DP98- So why Dundee?

NQ- Well having been a Scottish International I had always wanted to play with a Scottish side so when the gaffer came in for me I felt this was a good opportunity to sign a long term contract get y family settled and after all Dundee is a great city!

DP98- as for the gaffer you have had a very long relationship with Tony? Tell us about it?

NQ- Tony is probably the only person I  know who has been at more clubs than I have but while I might have a bit of a reputation of being unlucky and getting relegated he is known as the promotion king.  first met Tony at Loftus Road when I was 17 at QPR he managed me there briefly before Ray Wilkins took over. We met up again at Southampton and then at Wolves. I have had an excellent relationship with him and he was very much part of my decision to come here to Dundee.

DP98- How do you feel the club will do this season?

NQ- I feel we have a very strong side the addition of Robbie Raeside to work with the youngsters and the signings of both Iain Vigaurs and Olivier Kapo are huge. Leighton is proving to be one of the bst young finishers in Scotland and I have managed to stay healthy with my new training I feel this will lead to me remaining healthy as I know the club needs me.

DP98- Excluding the signings you've just mentioned the club does not have a lot of depth, do you know what the gaffer is looking at for re-inforcements?

NQ- I know the gaffer has mentioned publicly that he wants to save the bulk of transfer monies he does have for strengthening the squad once we are back in the SPL. I have though been working closely with him looking at some Icelandic players and he does have some connections to other Scandanavian players from his time at Rosenborg and AIK. I'm sure there will be a few new bodies in during the January transfer window.

DP98- I thank you for your time!

NQ- You are welcome!
